Divers Surprised As Seals Suddenly Approached And Grabbed Them

Published on 10/08/2021

When you go scuba diving, you never know what you’ll come across or find when you’re underwater. You never know what may happen, from viewing incredible wildlife and underwater beauty to discovering hidden treasures. In this scenario, the divers were in for a tremendous surprise that they were not expecting when they put on their diving equipment.

Unexpected Appearance

Something drew Grayson and his diving partner’s attention when they ventured under the water on that fateful day. They didn’t see ancient wrecks or a treasure, though. While there were interesting flora and fauna to see, they were stopped in their tracks by something else.

Hidden Gems Of The Atlantic

The divers were taken aback when they noticed two Atlantic gray seals that arrived seemingly out of nowhere. There are some individuals who would be horrified by this, as seals aren’t always as nice as they’re portrayed to be.

Instincts

The divers possessed excellent intuition and were well-versed in both the water and its inhabitants. These instincts took over. The divers realized they didn’t have a choice about what to do next at that time.

Nothing

Normally, divers are taught not to disturb animals in their natural habitat. Especially when the consequences can be far worse for the diver than for the animal. When the divers saw the seals were approaching, they tried to remain as calm as possible. They’d been found…

Spotted

Despite the fact that most seals have a reputation among divers for being interested and playful, some have been reported to become hostile when confronted by humans who appear to be a threat. Grayson was attempting to appear unthreatening. After all, the divers had intruded on their territory…

Still And Calm

Grayson and his diving partner maintained their composure. Slowly, the two seals approached them. The divers stayed as still as possible, but they realized this would be a fantastic photo opportunity, so they went ahead and took one.

Seals are also notorious for swooping in from behind or showing up in the middle of dense kelp forests. Just like that, the divers were approaching a forest. They continued to film to see what would happen next.

Into The Unknown

Nature is known for being spontaneous, especially when it comes to the ocean, which is the world’s largest natural ecosystem. Divers don’t really know what to expect when they go into the water because there is still so much about the oceans that people don’t know about. These divers were ready to go on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

Once In A Lifetime

Gary Grayson is recognized for his underwater photography, but he was the one who got to experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this time. Even though he was apprehensive, he knew that remaining calm would be beneficial. He had not anticipated the seals doing what they did next.

Grayson dove with a friend while incidentally getting the entire incident on film. They had no idea, however, that they would be collecting great footage that would drive millions of people insane when it went viral on YouTube.

Up Close And Personal

The seals swam closer and closer to the divers while they continued filming, which seemed like a miracle at the time. In fact, the famous film begins with a seal directly in front of the camera.

Just Babies

The cute seals approached the divers, and Grayson and his colleague quickly recognized the seals were merely puppies! They realized how critical it was to remain perfectly still after seeing this. Just look at how cute they are! who would want to do anything sudden so as to scare them?

Pups

They wanted the young seals to feel safe enough to stay. The seals were more likely to be skittish while they were young, and there was a higher possibility that they would swim away. The divers tried their hardest to limit their motions to a bare minimum.

Incredible Opportunity

The two divers were not going to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime chance to photograph these wild animals up close and personal. Thankfully, Grayson and his companion were quickly accepted by the seals. The seals began to circle the divers, almost as if they were putting on a show.

Charismatic Creatues

Seals are known for being curious and active animals, but what makes them even more unique is that each one has a distinct personality. It didn’t take long for one of the seals to act. Just look at this pic and see how amazing this interaction looks!

Like No Other Dive

Seals are inquisitive and friendly for the most part. Some people, on the other hand, can be aloof and wary. Knowing this, Grayson and his companion needed to be cautious about what they were dealing with in order to protect themselves.

Despite their extensive knowledge, the divers were concerned about how the meeting would turn below. Getting that close to a wild seal was something they hadn’t done before. What occurred after that was incredible…

The seals quickly proved themselves to be the inquisitive kind. The divers became more friendly as they circled and closed in on them. The divers were relieved and delighted by this turn of events. There was no doubt that these divers felt very safe after the seals proved to be non-hostile.

Playful Babies

After all, they were going to have a good time. In several ways, the seals resembled water dogs. They even had cute puppy-like eyes that begged to be played with. The divers, on the other hand, had no idea what was about to happen.

Close Encounter

Grayson and his companion couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. They were so near to the seals that they couldn’t believe their eyes. Only the seals drew the divers’ attention. Seals, on the whole, don’t open up all that quickly because they’re naturally wary. These seals, on the other hand, were a different breed.

The Friendliest

These seals swam right up to the divers as if they wanted to be friends, much to the joy of the divers. Thanks to the video footage, everyone was able to witness a once-in-a-lifetime event. Even yet, there were some strange things going on that the divers were wary of.

A New Friend

The seals got so close to the divers’ astonishment that they began to interact with them as well. Grayson was nudged by one of the seals. It appeared to be attempting to grasp his hands. The seal was reaching out with his flippers as if he wanted Grayson to reach out with his own and join in the fun. Grayson, on the other hand, shook the seal’s flippers when they came face to face.

The Seal Takes The Lead

The seal clung on Grayson’s arm with its flippers after they “shook hands.” Grayson and his companion merely let the seals take the lead because they’d never had such a close encounter before. They didn’t know how to deal with the problem. Surprisingly, most scuba divers aren’t animal trainers. Instead, Grayson remained motionless as the seal rubbed its head and neck across his arm.

Odd Behavior

When divers go into bodies of water with the goal of studying animals, they usually swim with a pod of seals for days until they gain the seals’ trust. The seals need that much time to assess if the humans pursuing them are safe to approach.

This is why when Grayson and his diving partner saw the seals, they didn’t make any hasty actions. It was odd that they were being approached so quickly. Especially when one of the seals decided to approach the divers up close.

Sign Of Aggression

When a seal comes way too close to a human so quickly and unexpectedly, it’s usually interpreted as a sign of aggressiveness. Grayson and his friend, on the other hand, handled the issue admirably. The seals wanted to play because it went so nicely.

Siblings

The seal began play-fighting by chewing at Grayson’s garment after nuzzling his arm. Meanwhile, the second seal felt safe enough near the divers to swim around them and go about its business. He’s less trusting and fun, but he’s still quite close to his sibling.

A Whole New World

The gracefulness with which these seals glided in the water further added to the impression that they were completely content to be in the company of humans. They usually have to waddle around on their flippers and hop onto rocks or boats when they’re on land. However, they are most at ease when they are submerged.

Exploration Time

After birth, seals stay with their moms for at least four months before venturing out on their own. Perhaps these seals had finally left the nest and were taking in their new surroundings. These scuba divers hoped the seals’ mother wasn’t too close behind them.

The lively newborn seal definitely defied expectations by swimming directly towards Grayson. It began assessing the diver right away. It didn’t hesitate to see how far things could go after it understood the diver was nice. There were no limits to what this seal wanted to do!

The seal bit at Grayson’s suit a little further before making a move no one saw coming. The divers were concerned and suspicious. It took the divers some time to figure out what was going on.

Grayson quickly concluded that the seal must have relished being nuzzled. He began scratching the seal’s neck and head as if it were a small dog at that point. Grayson was allowed to continue doing this for a while by the seal.

The divers weren’t sure how long the seals would stay after the hand-flipper shake and the small nuzzle session. Because these kinds of moments are so transitory, it’s fantastic that they were able to capture it all on film.

The seals could have swum away at any time, but it turned out that things were only getting started. The seal began to move as if it wanted Grayson to grasp what it was trying to convey. The seal became increasingly enraged till…

Couldn’t Figure It Out

The seal kept moving closer and closer to the seafloor as Grayson scratched its neck as if it was trying to communicate something. It nibbled at Grayson’s glove again, trying to persuade him to do what it desired. Grayson had to discover out what that was first. This went on for a few minutes until the seal eventually let go and everything became clear.

Finally Figured Out

The seal eventually flipped over onto its back. It was plain what it wanted Grayson to do at that point. Grayson’s petting skills were so impressive that this seal asked him to stroke its tummy! It was incredible how plainly this seal communicated. While this would be typical dog or cat behavior, the fact that a seal enjoys belly rubs demonstrates how universal the feeling is among animals.

Loving It

Grayson’s belly-rubbing talents were so superb that the seal was witnessed fluttering its flipper in delight over the diver’s hand. It was a lovely sight to behold, especially as the seal’s flabby coat flowed in time with the waves. The seal remained on its back for quite some time, evidently having a good time. As he snapped back up to make another move, the seal got even more playful.

The seal, on the other hand, grew more energetic and eager to play with its new buddies. It had begun chewing at Grayson’s glove and even had his hand in its teeth at that point! These seals were extraordinary and unlike anything, they had ever seen or heard about.

When the seal had had enough of belly massage, it swam back up to face Grayson. The diver slid his hand behind the seal’s chin and began scratching it. The seal seems to enjoy it as well, as evidenced by its pleased smile in the video.

The Second Seal

Grayson looks a little concerned with his diving buddy in the video. The more the seal bit his hand, the more concerned he became. Fortunately, the bites don’t appear to be severe. The seal appeared to be attempting to amuse the diver.

Grayson then opted to relinquish control to the seal. Meanwhile, the second seal decided that it was his turn to be noticed and began sniffing Grayson’s feet. Perhaps he was getting more trustworthy or desiring attention after witnessing the other seal being lavished with affection.

The first seal eventually grew tired of all the games. The seal was clearly appreciative of the belly massages and scratches, but as the diver continued to pet its fur, the seal began to swim away. Its pal had seen and realized it was time to leave.

Snooze You Lose

The divers watched as the seals swam away, but they were ecstatic about the whole thing. They couldn’t believe what they’d just witnessed. What a shame for the second seal, who wasn’t so trusting and was about to join in the fun. Of course, neither of them could have predicted how far their encounter would spread online.

He Was Loving It

Grayson’s video quickly acquired international attention, and he was asked about his experience. Throughout the event, he assured the reporters that he was “absolutely loving it.” “I had seen other seals in the water but they just buzzed past us. None was as inquisitive as [this seal] was, and none as friendly,” Grayson told the Manchester Evening News.

In Their World

Most people would be stumped as to how to react in such a scenario, yet Grayson and his friend handled it perfectly. “We were advised to simply sit on the bottom of the kelp,” Grayson explained, “but the more still we were, the more curious this seal became since we were in their world.”

“I’ve Never Known Anything Like That”

Despite being an experienced diver, Grayson acknowledges that he has never had this type of encounter, particularly with wild seals in the water. Every diver’s dream, and what he said captured the essence of the experience well. Continue reading to find out…

“The grey seal came across and had five minutes with me, kind of thing. Then another was climbing up my leg. I’m an experienced diver but I have never known anything like that. I’ve been all over the world, to Mexico and Cuba, to dive with great big mantras and sharks,” he added.

Grayson and his diving companion were taken aback at first, but that was most likely because they hadn’t expected the seals to communicate with them. “I’m not one to frighten easy,” Grayson explained, “If the truth be told, I’m a bit of an [adrenaline junkie]. Before that, I was into sky-diving, I had done aerobatics. I tend to live life on the edge. But this was certainly up there with anything I have ever done.”
